USCGC Eagle in Newport Rhode Island
International Yacht Brokers Boatshed Newport is pleased to have recently toured the U.S.C.G.C. Eagle docked in Newport RI.
Originally commissioned in 1936 as the Segelschulschiff Horst Wessel in Germany, both Adolf Hitler and Rudolph Hess were present at her original launch and christening. She is equipped with six 20mm anti-aircraft guns said to have downed three Soviet planes and one of her own (pilot error...he survived) in combat.
The now so named United States Coast Guard Cutter Eagle was commissioned in 1946. Her homeport is in New London, CT at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. She is classified as a Barque with an overall length of 295 feet. She is used as a training vessel for aspiring officers of the U.S. Coast Guard.
She is amazing to see...a true tall ship in all of her glory. Boatshed Newport salutes the U.S.Coast Guard for their fantastic service to our country!
