Boatshed Newsletter November 2014
Welcome to Boatsheds Newsletter, in it we round-up what Boatshed has been up to in the boat sales market and report on major events and trends in the sector. We are also introducing new and exciting Boatshed products and initiatives to support our customers, and give advance notice of future Boatshed events. With inciteful contributions from customers, brokers in the field and industry experts, its designed to bring together information that we think our customers - sellers and buyers - will find useful and interesting.
Read Boatshed's report on the used boat market, current trends, pricing, and attitudes of buyers, includes important lessons for owners with boats to sell. Traditionally, boating and boat ownership have been viewed as lifestyle choices which, to a certain extent, resist the ups and downs of economic flux. The desire and passion to get afloat and enjoy all that sailing has to offer results in many people owning boats despite, rather than because of, the financial consequences of so doing. Whilst those considerations still apply to areas of the second-hand, brokerage boat market, the long tail of the recent recessions in the UK and mainland Europe and the general global downturn, has had a real impact upon the marketplace, which has continued during 2014.

Another thing we are committed to at Boatshed is reducing the costs of boat ownership for our customers. Boat buyers will, typically, spend about 20% of the price of a boat on necessary equipment, products and services within the first 12 months of ownership. This expenditure can be considerable and is often overlooked by other brokers. We are committed at Boatshed in reducing the costs of boat ownership for our customers, discounts up to 10%

An important part of what we do at Boatshed is help our owners’ boats stand out from the crowd and attract serious interest in a busy, often crowded marketplace. The strength of our website and IT platform, and the attention and importance our brokers place upon extensively photographing and detailing every aspect of a boat for sale, is a key part of that philosophy, but we are always devising new ways to support this effort.
Together with the Marine Inspection Association of surveyors and brokers, we have introduced across the group Independent Pre-Sale Assessments (or IPAs) to help market second-hand sail and motor boats. Boats we sell can be physically inspected, assessed and reported upon by an experienced, independent, marine surveyor before they are listed. Up to 56 critical areas of a used boat are assessed by an expert surveyor. The IPA report appears alongside the boat’s advertised specification and is immediately available to any prospective buyer who views or requests information about the boat.

'Lucky' doesn’t even cover it; I love my job as a yacht broker with Boatshed.com. Most brokers say they have a passion for sailing; my passion is for the actual boats we sell. I get to experience so many different types of boats, of all shapes and sizes and a little of what I like to call 'ownerisms'. I have met some wonderful people and have been privileged to be involved in the dreams of many customers who have become good friends.
